Also, as seen in the photo, Tate Music Group was able to schedule Voices of Glory to perform with another TMG artist, country music legend - Lee Greenwood! What an incredible show and a blessing for all those who heard & saw it!

Mariah Hostrander began her singing/songwriting career in 2006 at the age of 13. With influences from BarlowGirl to Paul Baloche, Mariah has captured the muse to deliver a compelling folk-rock sound with well-crafted lyrics that tell life stories easy for most people to appreciate.

Mariah Hostrander’s first full-length project, “Beautiful Scars” was released in 2008, followed by a Christmas single “The Angels Sing” in 2009. Fast forward to 2011 and “Picture It,” impeccably expands her discography with her first national release with Tate Music Group.

They are both nominated in the Youth In Music category...which makes it difficult to hope that one of them wins (which means the other wouldn't). But that is a problem we are happy to deal with! Nashville, Tenn. (July 31, 2011) – The ICM Faith, Family & Country Awards first round nominees were today announced in Nashville. Presentation of awards in 22 key categories for the 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music Awards Show will be held on Friday, October 28, 2011 in Nashville at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

The ballot, voted on by membership, includes a stellar array of major names in a broad range of categories that include entertainer, artist, new artist, song, songwriter, group, duo, musician, radio personality, radio station, film, and television honors. Driven Cure is correct...you can call hundreds of venues, churches, contacts...but you may just have one that says 'Yes'...and you have to be ready to pounce on that opportunity. Local Christian band tours country, releases second album

Two Chowchilla police officers took a leap of faith last year when they turned in their badges and guns and picked up a bass and a microphone to pursue musical ministry. Ex-officers Heath Middleton and Phil Cheatham — joined by Phil’s son Michael and Michael’s friend Justin Webster — took their contemporary Christian band, Driven Cure, on the road. Together they’ve played in venues across the country and will perform next month at Spirit West Coast — one of the largest Christian music events in the country.

Middleton and the Cheathams led the church band at Passion Driven Ministries in Chowchilla for years before deciding to branch off and become an outreach worship group in 2008. “We had a vision to go from church to church to teach people what worship is about — and what worship is about is a relationship with God,” Middleton said. After throwing around names in the police department’s report writing room, Middleton and Cheatham decided on Driven Cure, Cheatham said. “Jesus is the cure,” he said, to which Webster added, “We are driven to bring people to the cure.” The group aims to take listeners on a musical and spiritual journey with their progressive rock worship style, band members say.

The band signed with Oklahoma-based label Tate Music Group in January 2009 and released its first album, Astray No More, that fall. “Lyrically it’s straightforward Christian music that you would hear in church,” said Webster, the band’s lead guitarist. “Heath, the main vocalist, wrote all the songs. We just kind of threw together what we had and got it out there.” The band took more time to perfect its sophomore album, Message, which will be relased August 9. “It’s more metaphorical,’ Webster said. “The albums share the same themes, but the second was a collaborative writing effort.” One of the underlying themes was inspired by a worshiper’s testimony, Phil Cheatham said. “He said he made a mess out of his life, but God made a message,” he said. “God can always use what looks like a rough or tough situation and make it into a message that can benefit that person or other people,” Webster added.

Driven Cure spends much of its time touring — as far east as Nashville and as far west as Hawaii — and the remainder of its time serving as the worship band at Good News Ministries in Madera. “Last April we all resigned from our employments to pursue full-time music ministry,” said Webster, a former construction worker.
Although it has sometimes been difficult adjusting to widely flexible schedules and financial uncertainty — and trying to find a niche in a music industry that is ever evolving — the band members say their passion for music and for God make it all worthwhile. “We don’t want to be doing anything other than this,” Webster said.

The band books its own tours, and will perform “anywhere they’ll let us,” Phil Cheatham said. “We can call 600 venues and 599 of them might say ‘no’ and one person will say yes and we’ll jump on it.” “We play everywhere from as tiny as a little 10-people church to coffee shops to music festivals to as big as the main stage at Spirit West Coast,” said Micheal Cheatham, the band’s drummer and a former marketing student at UC Merced.

Spirit West Coast is a big step for the band, members say. Last year Driven Cure had to “pay to play” at the event, which means their fans had to purchase a certain number of tickets for the group to be able to perform. “We ended up doing more than $10,000 in ticket sales and they put us on the Air One mainstage,” Webster said.
This year the event’s organizer booked the band to play two concerts at the three-day festival, held at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey.

The band is also in the midst of the Igniting the Body Tour — a worship tour featuring Driven Cure and Good News Ministries’ pastor Eddie Gallegos. Tour information can be found on the band’s website, DrivenCure.com.

One of my Tate Music Group colleagues introduced me to the music video and song called 'Friday' by Rebecca Black. She also shared with me this article from Billboard that I found very interesting for artists and musicians. Whether you like the song/video or not...this article and story prove to me, once again, that there are no easy ways to make it in this industry.

My advice - write really good songs, record those songs, perform those songs (anywhere and everywhere you can), and tell as many people as possible about those songs...so you can ultimately sell those songs! But that's just my advice...take it or leave it.

We had an incredible Tate Music Group & Variance Showcase at South By Southwest last week. Our artists did outstanding...as did our staff and promotion team. It was a really great event and over 800 people at last count. In fact, the OK Gazette (a very popular local entertainment paper) was there to experience the Buffalo Lounge and Tate Music Group showcase...and wrote up a great article. Check it out here.

This is a short note to show artists how looking at and thinking about their music from a business perspective can really get ahead of the competition by making things better and simpler.

One of the things we stress over and over here at Tate Music Group is the importance of live events and CD signings/interviews, etc. These not only provide much needed exposure to the artists...they also provide an outlet for CD and merchandise sales...which, at the early stages of an artists' career, are vital to being able to keep going.

Now there seems to be a device that allows you to accept credit card payments via your smart phone...right at your merch table. That is a pretty cool option for artists who are trying their hardest to create true fans...who will buy their stuff.

Judge for yourself if this device is a good option for you. But remember that not pushing and selling the music you have worked so hard on is never a good option.

That is a lot of money, folks. And it is the amount of money that Dave Matthews Band made last year just by touring/performing alone. Of course, that includes not only tickets but merchandise and sales at the shows.

Not Dave Matthews? Who is? Well, Dave is, of course. But very few others hit that level and take home that payday from gigs and tours in a year. But, the principle this is based on is solid. Play good music, put on good shows, and love your craft and the people that support you. Big or small, that is true for everyone that aspires to grow in this industry. We can't stress enough how important it is for artists to get out and play, play, play...any and all shows you can.

I was at a U2 concert recently and Bono mentioned that the last time they had been in our college town was 25 years ago...playing at a small bar/club down the street from the stadium we were in. Interestingly enough, I had many friends in college play at that exact place. One major difference is that my friends stopped playing and performing and became accountants. Nothing wrong with that...but if you want to make it...you have to keep at it until you do.

Another great album released earlier this month - Aaron Logan's worship rock album, Freedom Calls. With a mix of strong vocals, writing, and musical accompaniment...not to mention excellent production...Aaron has created an album that is very solid from start to finish. His songs are great for corporate worship as well as private reflection and entertainment.

The album starts with By The Cross, which could be seen as the thesis for the whole work...because, as Aaron explains, it is by the cross that all else is possible. The title track, Freedom Calls, and others like Live to Glorify and Grace Enough continue to express our hope in Christ and our reason for being.

I don't know if you knew this or not but Tate Music Group produces weekly radio programs that go out to over 400 radio stations nationwide! These are FM...listen while you drive...terrestrial stations...all across the country! One program is called Breakthrough and it focuses on new and heartfelt worship music from all over...including many TMG artists. The other programs are title, X-Tracks, and they run everywhere from Minnesota to Texas and Pennsylvania to Kansas City. This is more of a Christian rock and contemporary based show with a lot of local flavor to them. We keep things regional to showcase the talent these areas have to offer. It has been a very exciting few weeks here at Tate Music Group. One of the main reasons is the release of our brand new online music, media, and entertainment magazine - Variance.

Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing launched this first issue on July 1st...and on that first day alone we had over 40,000 people come through the site and read the magazine. That is awesome on so many levels...not the least is that thousands and thousands of people are reading about our artists and their music (through reviews, interviews, ads). It is great!

This issue has some great interviews and articles with artists Regie Hamm and Dave Barnes...as well as an interesting local take on the goings on of San Diego, CA.

We are really excited about the Tate Music Group release of Regie Hamm's new CD - 'Set It On Fire.' It is a tremendous album...and when you know Regie's story and the faith that brought him to this place...it is even better.

The music is great...the writing tremendous...and for you American Idol/David Cook fans...Time Of My Life is the final track on the album. Personally, I think Regie's version is outstanding - he really owns that track...no seriously, he owns it. It's his song.

We are excited about the opportunities that are opening up for Regie and his music. He is also in the running for a special opportunity with Oprah...which is kind of a big deal. Personally, I think he should be shooting for Larry King...cause if you get there...you know you've really made it.

Seriously, get the CD. It's really, really great music.

We got this exciting news at the end of the week and I couldn't be more stoked - Tate Music Group is building a new, state of the art studio. I was able to tour the facilities which should be up and running in the next few weeks.

It is an incredible space. 4,000+ square feet - green room with full view of band studio (for family, friends, etc), complete artist studio with vocal booths, extra large equipment storage space, and (one of the best features) a completely furnished artist apartment to stay in while recording. Awesome, right?! All under one roof and right around the corner from the rest of the Tate Music Group campus.

This is incredible for TMG and our artists! We are finishing up the interior design work but I'll post pics as soon as I can. Come check them out...and let's make some music!

We got this correspondence from an artist that recently came in to record with his band. I thought I would share it with you readers and let you see his thoughts and experience. It was an exciting note to get for us...enjoy:

Dr. Tate. On the week of May 4th my band was at your music studio to record our first CD. Upon arrival I met with Jameson Reynolds who introduced me to all of the staff and producers. Our producer was Jeff Lee who right away got us started tracking. We got drums and bass done on the first day because Jeff did a lot of pre-planning before we got there. On the second day we did guitars. Jeff was kind enough to do several tracks for us and had some ideas we had not thought of. By the third day we were doing vocals and loop tracks to enhance the CD. Our lead singer has used studios in OKC that have taken weeks to do just drums and at a cost ten times more than our TMG contract. Jeff went over and above for my band and in 4 days of tracking we have a CD that is air-play ready for any radio station. I also found out that your producers have played on CD's for some big names around the country but they are so humble you would never know. Next is our photo shoot and cover design. I cant wait to meet the rest of your staff. If I ever get the opportunity to come back to TMG to record I will jump on it...

Thanks again Dr. Tate for giving local musicians like myself a chance to shine an be recognized.

I got this photo the other day from our Founder, Dr. Richard Tate. He had been asking out Executive Producer, Don Johnson, for a picture or two of his accomplishments, etc. Don sent him this photo of the gold record album he produced for Emmy Lou Harris. That is a huge accomplishment and we are ecstatic to have Don as a part of our production team...making more records that will turn to gold.

It really has been a busy couple of weeks here at Tate Music Group. Last week, TMG artists and America's Got Talent stars, Voices of Glory, came out to record and perform a few shows in the Oklahoma City area. While they were here, we set up an interview with the Fox affiliate here. You can watch the interview here.

Also, this week we welcomed country music legend, Neal McCoy. Neal came out to record with us and then was off to a few shows lined up in Branson, MO. Neal's new music, along with his book, will be releasing soon. We are very excited about having Neal and Voices of Glory as a part of our Tate Music Group family.

With all this excitement...it will be nice to have a long weekend to rest and reflect on this Easter season. I'm sure April will bring plenty of excitement of it's own.

Being Brought Before Great Men

I was thinking today about the scripture out of Proverbs 18:16 – A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men. I know God has blessed me with the gift of music, and I want to share this gift with the world. In doing so, I am not pursuing it for own personal gain, but for the advancement of the kingdom. I believe that God has brought me before great men, and for me that has been Tate Music Group. I knew that when I signed with Tate that I was making the right decision. I had prayed over this decision, and only being left with a feeling of peace. When signing the contract I read the “Mission Statement” and knew that they were Christ focused. This was the kind of people I wanted to partner with.

Tate as a company operates their business with an attitude of excellence. My experience all started with the director of acquisitions Brianne Webb who explained, directed, and gave me comfort about signing to the record label. I have worked side-by-side with my producer Jameson Reynolds, and watch him pour his heart and soul into my project. I saw the excellence of Janae Glass create a superb representation for the cover of my new release, “I Know That You Can Hear Me.” There are so many others who are working extremely hard to make this project a success. I can’t thank everyone enough for their dedication, and commitment.

During my visit to Oklahoma for the “Artist of the Year” contest I was able to get to know the staff, and their families on a more intimate level. I walked away from that experience feeling so excited about this new chapter in my life. Everyone I met was excited about their job, and their role in the company. There was no “I” in the vocabulary of anyone who I came into contact with. They all operated and functioned as a body, and they get things done with the highest level of excellence.

Many great artists are signing to the label, and having great success. If you feel God is leading you in this direction, pray about it, ask for God’s leading. Know that if you sign with Tate you’re not being scammed, but it’s an opportunity to make the vision God has placed in your heart become a reality.

Tate Music Group is quickly becoming recognized as one of the best record labels to partner with. Remember that the investment you are sowing into your ministry is small in comparison to the investment they are putting into you. They also, give you the opportunity to get that money back. Who does that? All you got to do is work hard, and be committed. Know that you are being brought before great men.

I mentioned in an earlier post that Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing have started creating and running national television commercials on major cable networks like MTV, VH1, BET, and many others. It is an incredible opportunity for national exposure of our artists and their music.

I thought I would share with you some of the thoughts and information from the President of Tate Publishing and Enterprises, Ryan Tate: "Since launching the campaigns...[we] have already reached nearly 145,000,000 million viewers. That is right, 145 million viewers have watched our commercials and the buzz is incredible. This type of support and exposure is exactly what it takes [artists] to be successful and set themselves apart. I am so proud to be part of a company that is forward thinking and continues to put [artists] first."

There isn't another company or group that gives this kind of support and national exposure to their artists. Keep your eyes open and go get your soda during the shows...cause these commercials are worth watching.

Counting today...we only have 9 days until the 2nd Tate Music Group Artist of the Year Contest! We had another meeting today and the excitement is building. It has been an incredible year for all of us here at TMG...and for Jeff Chandler (last year's winner). I can't wait to see who wins this one...and what God has in store for their music.

I am also excited about our emcee for the evening - Dove Award winning artist, Clay Crosse. Clay is an incredible singer and entertainer...and has an incredible career of music and ministry. It will be excited to have him as a part of our contest...and perhaps sing a little something...who knows...

Last week, one of the most exciting things happened with Tate Music Group...we started offering artists the choice of a fully designed website or professional, 30 second commercial videos. This is an incredible opportunity for our artist...and it completely gives them the upper hand when it comes to getting their music in front of people.

It has truly been an incredibly exciting month or so here at Tate Music Group...even more so than normal. I've sat in meetings and discussed the present state of the music industry (and how TMG is leading the charge into the future) with some of the major players including Kenny Rogers, Jim Mazza (Capitol Records), Jim Halsey, and...just today...Neal McCoy (more on that in a later post).

It is so exciting to be a part of a company like Tate Music Group...and to take part in both casting vision and helping make sure that it comes to pass. As I look to the coming new year...I can hardly wait to see what awaits us.

But...this post is really about something that I think is just 'cool.' Jim Halsey, one of the biggest names in Nashville, presented a signed and concert played guitar to our Founder, Dr. Richard Tate. The guitar is signed by the Rolling Stones...as in THE Rolling Stones. They are one of maybe 3 or 4 bands/artists who have forever shaped and influenced the face and sound of the music industry.

Definitely not. Today was an incredible day at Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing. As you can see in the picture...the legendary Kenny Rogers came to our offices to visit with us about partnering with music, books, and many other possibilities. It was a great day!

And may I just say what an impressive and gracious man Kenny Rogers is. He was more interested in talking with us and listening to so many of our stories than in telling us about himself. He even took the time to talk to and take pictures with group of artists who happened to be in the offices today, too. Needless to say, they were surprised by that in more ways than one.

Our founder, Dr. Richard Tate has a saying - "It isn't success that spoils people...it is failure." After today...I know that to be even more true. Kenny Rogers is one of the most successful artists in history...and has the kind of worldwide name recognition that is found in only a handful of artists. Yet, he is so humble and generous with his time.

This was truly a great day for us here at Tate Music Group. The music industry is often about who you know...and what they are saying about you. Well, it is very clear that the word on the streets of Nashville (and beyond) regarding Tate Music Group...is very good. If you don't believe me...just ask the Gambler.

Some of our Tate Music Group executive staff just came back from meetings in Nashville. They were meeting with some of the biggest and most influential names in music - Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Jim Mazza - Capitol Records, and Jim Halsey...to name a few.

In short, the meetings were to discuss the state of the music industry and how and what TMG is doing that is so completely different - not the least of which is being successful.

Needless to say, a lot of things were discussed as to what we do here at Tate Music Group. We have a model that is so completely unorthodox (in regards to the 'normal' label industry) that many can't believe we can actually do what we do for our artists. It is unheard of for a label to be in the kind of partnership that TMG goes into with artists...not to mention the fact that we don't own the masters of an artists' music...nor are they obligated to stay with us any longer than they want!

I guess if you sit back and look at it through the eyes of those business men and executives who have done it the 'normal' way for so long...and have grown up in the Nashville/Major Label environment...it is easy to see why Tate Music Group's ideas and model would seem so incredibly different...even radical...

But for us, its just how we do it...and its doing great!

Our staff her at Tate Music Group had a great meeting today regarding our annual Artist of the Year contest. Last year's competition was incredible! We had such a good time...hanging out all week with our finalists...shooting videos...rehearsals...and much more. It was great to sit and talk about last year's event...and plan how we can make this year's even better.

In the coming weeks we will be finalizing the plans for the evening...as well as collecting the submissions from our artists for voting. It is great to see the incredible amount of talent that our artists have. Last year I was amazed not only at the top finalists...but also at those who didn't quite make it...because they were great, too!

This doesn't have anything to do with music...but it is very exciting news that I wanted to share with all of cyberworld. Most people know that Tate Publishing is the parent company of Tate Music Group. Our book side helps to publish and promote the books of great writers so that the message and stories can be shared nationwide and beyond.

I just received news that one of the books we are blessed to work with, Day of War by Cliff Graham, is in the development stage to be a major motion picture. That is awesome! Here is the quote from our marketing department about this possibility: "Filmmaker David Cunningham (To End All Wars and The Path to 9/11) and producer Grant Curtis (Spiderman franchise) are attached to the development of Day of War as a major motion picture."

The book is tremendous, by the way! It is a story about King David and his Mighty Men...and the happenings recorded in the books of Samuel and Chronicles. Very well written and incredibly entertaining! I am excited about this possibility for Cliff Graham...and for Tate Publishing. Who knows...maybe a Tate Music Group artist will be able to take care of the soundtrack.

MUSTANG, OK – This week, Oklahoma-based record label Tate Music Group (TMG) has confirmed a new strategic sponsor partnership with the renowned Billboard World Song Contest.

As a sponsor for the contest, TMG will select one Grand Prize Winner to be awarded a TMG new artist development contract that includes recording a full album, event booking, and radio and web promotion. The agreement also expands the competition terms to include prizes for the top 36 entries in the contest, based on submissions from artists worldwide.

The Billboard World Song Contest was the first competition of its kind, and has made great strides in exposing first-time, unknown artists to the world through the Billboard World Song Contest Winners’ CD sent to music executives, producers, publishers, agents, promoters, and other music industry moguls.

There is a great article about one of our TMG artists that I wanted to share. Tate Music Group is proud of our artist, Nisha, and grateful for her kind words! You can look at the article about her in this months Music Connection Magazine - check out page 26.

“Like any dedicated artist...R&B singer Nisha Hester focused her energy on recording a masterpiece rather than seeking the perfect label. In her corner, however, was former manager, Eric Stancil, who took the time to research her options and mail press kits to potential takers. A likely prospect was...TMG Records.
Although TMG needs to hear at least 3 songs in order to choose an artist, one song in particular got the attention of their signing rep. “Where Did The Love Songs Go” had such an impact that she even included a special introduction in the contract that mentioned the impression-making track as the reason TMG wished to sign her.
‘There are several things I love about TMG,’ explains the rising diva. ‘I like the support and freedom they give to their artists. They allow their artists to maintain all the ownership - as far as songwriting royalties go, we own everything.’ Plus, she adds, ‘They give the highest royalty payments of all the labels out there.’ Also, Hester felt the weren’t hiding an agenda. “We have the freedom to cancel anytime we’re not happy. We can work with other third-party companies,’ she marvels. ‘We have so much freedom!’
There had been another label under consideration, but they asked for a significant chunk of money up front. Weighing the two options, it was clear which company offered the better deal. In fact, TMG’s deal was so generous that she signed without any negotiations.
‘It was almost too good to be true,’ she says. ‘I really didn’t have to think too much about it.’ The agreement itself goes a year and includes an option to renew. Hester recommends other artists to find the label of their dreams; she insists on persistence and never compromising. ‘This is your life – don’t just sign up to the first thing that comes your way.’ She states. ‘And never give up.’

My last post was to inform everyone that Tate Music Group had just signed national, award-winning singer/songwriter, Regie Hamm. This post is to let people know that Regie's #1 hit song, "Time of My Life", is making the television rounds. First, American Idol - where it was the winning song and became the first #1 hit for David Cook (it is also the longest running #1 single in history...). Next, it was featured on the finale of America's Got Talent. And last night, it made its' ballroom debut by being featured on Dancing With the Stars.

Wow! What an incredible few weeks for Regie, his song and music, and Tate Music Group. It is exciting to see the success he is having and to be a major part of that. We are set to release his next single to national radio in about 2 weeks.

This is a very exciting time for Tate Music Group and the artists we are blessed to work with. News stories like this continue to prove how success breeds success and exposure brings even more exposure. The dominoes are falling...and Tate Music Group is making its mark.

NASHVILLE, September 2, 2009 – Hit singer/songwriter/producer Regie Hamm scored his biggest hit this year with the solo-written, 16-week No. 1 song “Time of My Life” for American Idol’s David Cook, and today he has signed a combined book and record deal with the Oklahoma-based Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group.

The announcement will be made formal with Hamm’s appearances this weekend at Kansas City’s “Rock The Light” festival. Tate Music Group plans an immediate single release to CCM radio, followed by a CD release and book detailing his inspirational story.

The book tells the story of Hamm’s adoption of an orphaned Chinese girl and the life-changing events surrounding it, including composing the hit song, “Time of My Life,” which was inspired by his emotional journey these past six years.

With 21 No. 1 songs to his credit as a songwriter, and a Top 20 Adult Contemporary hit as an artist, Hamm is well-poised for the single release to CCM radio. The single will be followed by the book, as well as a 20-song CD, tentatively called “Full Circle.” The project will include nine No. 1 songs written by Hamm, and eleven new originals. Hamm says the 20-song project is truly about his life and his journey.

“You can’t see the circle while you’re making it,” Hamm said. “Only special moments can allow you to see all of it: China… babies… songs… music… dreams… success… happiness. They all mean different things to me because of what I have been through. Any plan I could’ve developed would never have been as beautiful and unexpected. This one was divine.”

Tate Publishing, based in Oklahoma City, was founded in 2001 and has become one of the fastest growing publishing companies in the nation. They recently expanded to include record label Tate Music Group, and are distributed nationwide through Universal and Ingram.

One thing you have to get used to at Tate Music Group is change...fast change...the kind of change that improves our services to our artists and gives us another leg up on all the other companies out there who are trying to figure out what we have that they don't. There is a lot to that question...and I don't have the time to dive in there tonight.

Tate Publishing and Enterprises, which obviously includes Tate Music Group, will be launching a new division in the coming months - a music publishing company. This is so exciting! We will be offering to our artists the opportunity to not only record, perform, and promote their original music...we will soon be giving them a channel to showcase their writing and talents so that others can hear it and pay them to use it.

It will also be a place where outside artists can showcase their own music. Artists and musicians from all over will be able to see if there is that one song they have been looking for. TMG artists can take advantage of this, too. You never know when someone out there has written exactly what you wanted to...but couldn't find the right words. It is going to be an incredible service...and more importantly, an incredible tool for Tate Music Group artists and their songs.

There are a lot of ins and outs that will be finalized between now and then but I wanted to just give the web-world a heads up. Like I said before, change happens quickly at Tate. If you aren't holding on...you'll be left behind. And in the music industry, no artist can afford that.

I wanted to share some information with you regarding some cool happenings with our artist of the year, Jeff Chandler. Yesterday, Jeff kicked off his radio tour with a stop in the great city of Tulsa, OK. He was featured on KXOJ - did an interview and his song 'Because of You.'

This was exciting for a few reasons. Obviously, it is cool to hear Jeff on the radio and know just how much hard work was put into making that happen. It is also cool, however, because it is great to hear him share his heart and passion for the music he writes and performs. This is hands-down one of the best things about working at Tate Music Group. Music, for so many of our artists, is the expression of God's love, grace, and hope through them. It is ministry...even before it is entertainment. That is exciting to be a part of...and I am so glad that Jeff is able to share his music (and message) with the world.

I just thought I would share information about a cool event coming up for some of our Tate Music Group Artists. Franklin, TMG artists/band, will be opening up for former American Idol contestant, Chris Sligh. The event is Jesus Fest 2009 in Clarksville, WV - August 15th.

This is a very cool opportunity for Franklin for many reasons. They will be able to do a full 45 min - 1 Hour set before Chris goes on. They will also be performing and sharing their music with a very large crowd - the more people who listen, the more people who like, buy, and share their music.

These are the kinds of opportunities Tate Music Group is going after for our artists. We want to provide avenues where our TMG artists can find success. Sometimes the venues are smaller, acoustic venues and other times there are festivals and auditoriums where it is easier to just guess the number of people. Either way, the more an artist can get out there, play, and share their music...the better.

People will hear it, like it, and tell others about it. I know this will be the case for Franklin...I just hope the encores don't keep Chris Sligh from being able to play.

It is incredible to think that this actually happens at a company. We don't have to do it. We don't need to nor are there any unwritten rules that tell us we should. Nope. This is just something that Tate Music Group (and Tate Publishing) just does.

I think this is one of the most incredible things that TMG offers each of our artists. I don't really have much more to say about this...I think the picture speaks for itself.

I've said it many times before but I'll say it once more...Tate Music Group is, hands down, the greatest opportunity for artists trying to make it in this industry.

I just wanted to write a quick post here to tell the internet world about a great meeting I had today with a potential Tate Music Group artist - we'll call him 'Jamie.' Jamie is incredibly talented - great musical skills, tremendous vocal ability, and writing that is off the charts (no, I am not exaggerating and no, 'Jamie' doesn't know this blog exists).

I am excited about this meeting because of a couple of reasons - 1 is that I am very excited about this partnership and seeing just how far we can take things with the music and 2 is that 'Jamie' is a go-getter that realizes what it is going to take to make it in this industry. He is out 3x a week performing at venues that probably range from 20 people to 200 people...but that doesn't matter too much to him right now because those people (20 or 200+) are walking away with his tunes in their head and his business cards in their pockets. Awesome!

That is something the Tate Music Group Acquisitions Staff is constantly trying to explain to many up and coming artists. It is vital to have an attitude that says, "I'm gonna go and do all that I can...and hopefully, somewhere along the way, I can get some help."

This is where we come in. We want to help artists achieve their dreams, one step at a time. Sometimes you just need that one door to open up...and other times it takes many doors and tons of phone calls to even get close to the dream. At Tate Music Group, our passion and purpose is to come alongside the artists we work with and help them get where they have been trying to get to on their own.

We believe dreams come true...but not without a lot of work and a lot of help.

It is amazing to be able to see what is going on with Tate Music Group and our parent company, Tate Publishing. Most of our artists and authors don't even get to see it but we are growing at an incredible rate.

I find it amusing when I am giving a tour to a potential artist. The conversation always turns to "Wow, you guys are packing it in here?!" It is true, we are truly outgrowing (in fact, have outgrown) our current buildings (we have 5 separate locations within Mustang) and are now expanding again.

We have purchased a very large building across the street and are in the process of gutting it and rebuilding it to fit our needs - mainly the production side of our books and music. I am very excited because soon the Tate Music Group studios will be across the street, instead of a 10 minute car ride away.

It's the little things, you know?!

Seriously, we are all very excited about what is going on with Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing. I think the main reason is that this expansion just shows how successful and how hard-working our company and our staff truly are. As an artist, that would make me overjoyed - to know that the label I partner with is doing outstanding in, let's face it, a pretty rough economic climate nationwide.

There is something to be said about working hard, working honest, and trusting that God is always in control.

Now, let's put up some more sheet-rock!

One of the things we try and stress to every artist we work with is the importance of getting and staying connected to your fan base. Why? Well, for starters, they are your fans. Simple as that. The fans are the ones who will not only buy your album...they will get the T-shirts and buttons, too. And, they're the ones willing to leave Milwaukee on a Friday to make it to a show you have in Cleveland on Saturday...in the middle of winter...and love you even more for it. True fans are dedicated to you and the music...as long as they feel like they are truly a part of you and the music.

For our TMG artists, we want to keep those connections as strong as possible. This is why we put a good amount of stress on social networking and connecting through online sites like myspace, facebook, and twitter. Basically, these sites and services are our modern day equivalent to the fan mail of the 60s and 70s. Artists of that era understood how important it was to answer the letters sent to them by adoring fans and friends. Why? To keep them as adoring fans and to make them realize that they truly are a part of the music.

We understand the importance of this at Tate Music Group...which is why I am so excited to be able to announce the new iPhone apps that we will be providing for all of our artists. These are AWESOME! They will be vital tools for our artists to use to keep their friends and fans updated on events, thoughts, music, reviews, and everything else...all while on the go! They will also be great sources of income for our artists because they will be apps purchased by fans...which means more sales and royalties to the artist.

They are also just plain cool. I mean, as a Tate Music Group artist, you are going to have your own app. Who else can say that?

Okay, so I really wanted to share this post from one of our artists, Jeff Chandler. Just to let you know, Jeff is one of the most talented people I have met...I mean that. As a songwriter, he writes with a talent and emotion that, in my humble opinion, is lacking in today's market. As a singer, great range and good, strong pipes. And, as a person, really good. It was great to meet and get to know Jeff and his family during our Artist of the Year Contest. The phrase 'Salt of the Earth' comes to mind.

So, I suppose these reasons stated above are why I truly enjoyed and appreciated Jeff's words (which I will post below). He gives an honest take on his experience and what all of our artists can expect when they work with Tate Music Group.

SO YOU'RE CONSIDERING TMG AS YOUR LABEL...
Okay...

So I'm getting a TON of questions from great indie artists everywhere about the integrity of Tate Music Group. This blog should give you a good idea what to expect if and when you sign with TMG.

First of all let me go on record saying that TMG is an amazing group of thinkers and business folks...heck their just awesome people! They are an integral part (if not the tip of the spear) in the future of the music industry and indie artists in particular at this stage in the game. My experience with them as their "artist of the year" for 2009 has been nothing but positive..

"Of course"...you're thinking to yourself "Mr. artist of the year"..."things are GREAT for you"..."but what about everyone who's NOT artist of the year???"

WELL...I'm glad you asked! Here's the long and short of what to expect when you sign with TMG:

DON'T expect an advance..meaning mad cash on the front end of your deal. These look attractive up front, but remember....this is a LOAN...it comes out of your hide later!!

DON'T expect a huge national push for your record. Tate are professionals in PARTNERING WITH INDIES to help them grow and make a living at your music.

1. They help you make an "easy on the wallet" record to kick-start your merch sales and make you credible in the industry. TRUST me...you'll be hard pressed to find someone that can make the quality of a record for the LITTLE amount of money you have to invest.

2. They give you a web-presence. They'll help you get your music distributed in the most accessible market known to human-kind: CYBERSPACE!! Yesssss...

3. They will help you develop best-practices in business to help YOU grow YOUR career. They will not do it FOR you...I think this is where people have gotten disgruntled with them in the past...you WILL NOT BE AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS.

I have been doing this for 18 years.....and only now am I beginning to see MODERATE succes.. Patience is a virtue...

Bottom line: They are a great PARTNER for indies...they can help you in many ways to become successful and YES...even a full-time artist!

In my humble experience you can trust TMG...They've always done for me what they said they would do and I know many artists with them that are hard workers that aren't looking for a handout who are very pleased with TMG...I am one them.

I highly recommend TMG to anyone who is serious about their music career.

Dylan said it...'the times they are a changing.' He wasn't talking about the music industry...but I am. I am constantly amazed at the changes and decisions happening on a weekly, and sometimes daily, basis. It seems that as soon as I get through with the articles, etc, from this week...they change and redirect so you never really know which way you are heading.

To be honest, I love it. Granted, I don't love things like that in any other area of my life but with my work in the music industry, I love it. I think it is because I see what we are doing on a daily basis here at Tate Music Group and it fascinates me to see what everyone else is doing or not doing to try and stay afloat, musically and financially.

One of the areas that is constantly changing and cannot be overlooked is the marketing and promotion of music. More specifically, the social marketing/networking side of music. This is something that we talk about all the time. I am constantly talking to potential artists about the importance of having a network of people that you are in contact/connection with so they can know the music, vision, and person of you as an artist.

In our internet society, the social networking culture is vital if you want to have any chance of making it. Why? Well, the old school way of 'pushing' an artist is going away...faster than anyone could have expected. Instead, the 'pushing' comes from the viral and grassroots marketing that can be helped, immensely, by social networking sites like myspace, facebook, and twitter.

One question that might come up is, "Why bother with it?" Well, it all comes down to connection with the listener. Music is an emotional thing. It can help you heal, forget, grow, laugh, relax, or rock...depending on what is on your playlist. Because of that, an artist needs to not only write/perform good music that connects with the listener but they need to keep that connection alive by letting the listener in on a little piece of who they are...or even what they are doing.

Who cares what Taylor Swift is getting at Baskin Robbins? Well, for starters, the thousands and thousands of followers she has on facebook and twitter alone. I am sure that Taylor doesn't always want to share everything...and she doesn't have to. But, as a very smart business-woman, she (or her people) realizes the importance of her letting everyone know that her favorite flavor is cappucino white chocolate chunk with blue sprinkles (just a guess).

You see, when Taylor posts or tweets about her favorite ice cream, her followers/fans know that little piece about her and they probably go and try that very same flavor...which is good for Baskin Robbins. Now, when Taylor mentions (or tweets) that her new album is coming out on pre-sale in 1 week...she has no problem getting those ice cream junkies to go buy the album. It is new-marketing at its finest.

Now for most artists (who aren't on the same level as Taylor Swift), this marketing can and should happen...just on a smaller scale. This is one of the things Tate Music Group focuses on as we work with our artists. You have to realize the importance of getting and staying connected to the people that loved your concert and the EP they got from your table. Now, you have to make sure that they stay connected and informed about new concerts and the upcoming release of your album...so they can go get it as soon as possible and 'be the first.'

And it wouldn't hurt to let everyone what your flavor is...

I received this information from some of our Executive Staff. I have to say, when I read it, I was blown away. Not by the facts and numbers that are presented...I knew what to expect there. I was blown away by the candid-ness of this author...willing to share her 'fortunes' (or misfortunes) with anyone who is willing to read them.

Now, you may say, "What does a book deal have to do with my music career/contract?" A lot. Yes they are different in subject/product but not in nature. The basic principle has always been the same for the publisher/label - get as much as you can out of the 'artist'...and then get some more.

Please hear me...I am not trying to say that individuals or companies are crooks, cheats, etc...I am, however, saying that the system that has been in place for a long, long time is not friendly or warm to the artists (or authors) who create the brilliance they sell.

At Tate Music Group, our vision and purpose is to change this model and mindset. We want to be more concerned with working together with our artists, side by side, instead of walking on their backs to get to the end goal. Success usually comes with a price...but Tate Music Group (and Tate Publishing) are not willing to pay the same types of ethical costs that have plagued this industry for so long.

Instead, we are setting our own price...and the outcome is gain.

A few years ago I made a promise to my writer friends that if I ever had a novel hit the top twenty of the New York Times mass market bestseller list that I would share all the information I was given about the book so writers could really see what it takes to get there. Today I’m going to keep that promise and give you the stats on my sixth Darkyn novel, Twilight Fall.

Here is the first royalty statement for Twilight Fall, on which I’ve only blanked out Penguin Group’s address. Everything else is exactly as I’ve listed it. To give you a condensed version of what all those figures mean, for the sale period of July through November 30, 2008. my publisher reports sales of 64,925 books, for which my royalties were $40,484.00. I didn’t get credit for all those sales, as 21,140 book credits were held back as a reserve against possible future returns, for which they subtracted $13,512.69 (these are not lost sales; I’m simply not given credit for them until the publisher decides to release them, which takes anywhere from one to three years.)

My net earnings on this statement was $27,721.31, which was deducted from my advance. My actual earnings from this statement was $0.

My advance for Twilight Fall was $50,000.00, a third of which I did not get paid until the book physically hit the shelf — this is now a common practice by publishers, to withhold a portion of the advance until date of publication. Of that $50K, my agent received $7,500.00 as her 15% (which she earns, believe me) the government received roughly $15,000.00, and $1594.27 went to cover my expenses (office supplies, blog giveaways, shipping, promotion, etc.) After expenses and everyone else was paid, I netted about $26K of my $50K advance for this book, which is believe it or not very good — most authors are lucky if they can make 10% profit on any book. This should also shut up everyone who says all bestselling authors make millions — most of us don’t.

Just as a side note - if this author would have worked with our parent company, Tate Publishing...the net earnings would have been almost 4 times as much. Just FYI.

That's right. A buzz. There is a buzz happening in the music world surrounding Tate Music Group and what we are doing with and for up and coming artists. This past week/weekend, some of our Executive Staff traveled to the Gospel Music Awards. They spent their time going to concerts, showcases, and interviews for our Artist of the Year, Jeff Chandler (who knocked it out of the park!). It was a great time for Jeff...and for TMG.

It seems that the music world just doesn't know what to do with Tate Music Group. Our president, Ryan Tate, was asked over and over again about how and why Tate Music Group works and what the secret to our success is. In fact, a good number of these questions were asked of him during an hour long interview he had with Billboard Magazine.

The secret is...there is no secret. Just a lot of vision, passion, and a ton of hard work. Tate Music Group has taken the best of the 'industry' and discarded the rest. We know how important it is for artists to retain their rights and freedoms. We know that artists want to have control over what they do. We know that artists can't do it all on their own and need help. And we know that so many channels won't work directly with artists...unless they have a label backing them up.

With all that in mind...Tate Music Group was started. TMG is able to provide the services, support, and opportunities that artists need to have a chance to make it in this industry. The difference is that, unlike so many other companies and labels, we walk side by side...and not on top of the artists we work with. Partnership is key for this to work...and it is working very well.

Another question that was asked a lot - "how is Tate Music Group so successful at a time when the music industry is struggling and in a decline?" The answer to that is hard work, incredible leadership, and great choices.

Allow me to take an example from a sport I love to do, cycling. The reason why Lance Armstrong is the greatest of all time isn't because he outsmarted the competition or had better equipment during the Tour de France. He is the greatest because he pulled away, during the mountain sections, when the rest of the pack tried to just maintain and not fall apart. He was willing to outwork everyone else...especially when everyone else was struggling to survive.

Similarly, the 'industry' is struggling...fighting the economy, piracy, unhappy artists, etc. Tate Music Group, on the flip, is growing, expanding, hiring...you get the idea. As a company, our leadership has kept us free from debt and placed us in a position to excell and change the face of the music industry. In fact, we are already seeing that happen...in Nashville of all places...

Every once in a while I talk to an artist who just isn't sure and tells me they want to "wait and see about us." Well, Tate Music Group is moving fast and picking up speed. I hope they don't miss the boat...

I received a letter from an artist who just signed with Tate Music Group. I am very excited that she is now a part of the TMG family for many reasons. First, she has a very beautiful voice and a lot of musical talent. Second, this has been a dream she has pursued for a very long time. And last but not least, she knows what it will take to make it to the next step. In other words...she gets it.

This is a very hard business to break into. Certain television programs, among other things, have given a false sense of ease regarding what it truly takes to find success. You have to be talented, you have to have incredible work ethic, and you definitely need to have what some would consider 'luck' (or maybe just really good networking...).

Another thing that is needed, though, to make this pursuit a true possibility is a strong team backing you up...helping to create opportunities and opening doors. This is something that so many indie artists just don't have. They have the first 3 but they are reluctant to move into a partnership with a label because of their fear, and rightly so, of losing their creative freedoms and their music rights.

At Tate Music Group, however, the artists we work with need not worry about that. One of the greatest parts about Tate Music Group is that our artists receive the benefits of the 4th thing (the team behind the artist and music) while maintaining their freedoms and control of who they are as artists. For me, hearing the stories I hear every week about bad contracts, etc...that freedom would be worth a lot.

I am so excited to see new artists join our TMG family. Obviously I am biased towards what we do and how we do it but, I have to be honest, I am constantly impressed at what we are able to do and offer the artists we are blessed to work with. It truly is an amazing thing to see our artists receive the 4th thing...without having to give up any of the other things that have gotten this far.

Our founder, Dr. Richard Tate, told us about a great comment he received about Tate Music Group from a close friend of his...who just happens to be a very big name in the music industry. This friend, Jim Halsey, is responsible (in all or in part) for the careers of such stars as Reba, Little Richard, Garth, The Oak Ridge Boys, Clint Black, James Brown, and countless others. Needless to say...he knows the business and when he hands out a compliment and an endorsement...you would do well to listen.

He told Dr. Tate that what we are doing here at Tate Music Group is much needed within the music industry. We provide the kind of service, team, and opportunity that artists need in order to find success and growth within the music industry. What most people find crazy is that we do and provide all this without taking away any rights (music or otherwise) from the artists we work with. Unorthodox? Yes. A better option than all the others? Absolutely!

I had the chance to meet Jim Halsey when he took part in judging the Tate Music Group 'Artist of the Year' Contest. It was a true pleasure to be able to talk with someone who has so much history and knowledge of this business. And I wasn't the only one to think this. After the contest, our artists had a chance to talk with Jim and pick his brain about what they needed to do better and how they should approach other aspects of their music career. It was a great site to see these artists soaking up the knowledge he was sharing. Cool stuff.

I guess that is why I feel so honored and happy at the comments that Jim made regarding Tate Music Group. It is great, and even inspiring, to know that what you are working hard for everyday, because you know it is the best thing for artists and their music, is being acknowledged by those who know the music industry as the way to go.

It has now been over 24 hours since the inaugural Tate Music Group 'Artist of the Year Contest' ended. And boy did it end with a bang! So many of us put in countless hours of planning, talking, changing, running, organizing, hoping, and praying to try and make this event a success. What we experienced Friday night was more than I think any of us, if we were truly honest, could have thought possible.

Don't get me wrong...we know we have tremendous artists and a 1st rate staff to put everything together...but, you have to look at the fact that this was the 1st, the inaugural, 'Artist of the Year Contest' and we were running in the dark (so to speak). I don't think we thought it could turn out as flawlessly (and wildly successful) as it did. Please hear me, I am in no way trying to throw out negativity...I am trying to shine light on our incredible staff, artists, and production team that put together an unforgettable performance event that will be very hard to beat in the following years.

Besides the incredible planning, production, and execution of the night's event...one of the things that I will take with me forever was the support and comradery I saw between all of our artists. That was truly a special thing. Sure, each of the finalists wanted to win the contest and take home the biggest prize...but you could tell that they were all routing for each other as well. At one point I heard that a few of the artists were in one artist's hotel room, playing an acoustic guitar and singing the songs that influenced them. That kind of connection is special...especially since it happened within about 36 hours.

In case you haven't heard, Jeff Chandler was the winner and is the Tate Music Group 'Artist of the Year.' We are so happy for Jeff and his family and we are excited about what this year is going to bring him. We are also excited about the other finalists: SallyJane, Ron Walters, The Cliftones, and Sarah Scharff. They are all tremendous talents and have very, very bright futures ahead of them.

Standing around after the show, I was able to hear some of the commentary made by our judging panel (which consisted of some very influential music industry professionals). The consensus was the same. It was hard to pick a winner because every one of the artists gave a tremendous performance. It was also unanimous that the future for these artists is as bright as they want it to be.

I am so glad that Tate Music Group can be a major part of helping them shine.

It is hard to believe that the Tate Music Group Artist of the Year Contest is only 3 days away. A ton of work has been put into the creation and scripting of the event...from live dancing and musical numbers to a featured cartoon, illustrated by our very own creative geniuses in the design department. I am always amazed at the talent that is pooled her at Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing.

The top finalists arrive tomorrow. For the next 2 1/2 days, we will have them finalizing video edits, practicing their performances, and treated to many fun and exciting events...including one where we all have to dress up real nice. It is going to be a lot of fun and very exciting.

Overall, though, I am just ready to get to Friday night. I know that the things happening before are important and necessary for the event itself but I just want to see our artists get up there and perform. I know they are all going to blow us away!

I have no idea who I think will win. I couldn't even venture a guess with any amount of certainty. One thing I am certain of, though, is that the Tate Music Group Artist of the Year Contest is going to be the best thing going Friday night...

Sorry Big XII basketball tournament, you'll have to take a backseat...

I was a history major in college...and no...I had no plans on becoming a high school coach! To be honest, I was running out of money and I needed to graduate. I assessed my situation, turned my minor to my major, and voila...a degree I don't think I will ever use for any related purpose.

That being said, I came away with an even greater love of all things old...historical...iconic. I love to know how and why things happened and what it means for us, today. I especially love the story side of history...the parts that can only be described through interviews and fireside chats. (I think that is what makes me so sad regarding the histories of ancient Greece and Rome...we'll never hear the accounts of events, battles, and decisions that have shaped our world.)

Well, I was listening to a radio interview as I commuted home from work this week and it really hit on the things I seem to enjoy the most: historical story and music. To be more specific, it was an interview with an African-American songwriter from the 1940s and 1950s. She was describing the life and work of a songwriter in those days. It was an interview full of nostalgia...it took you back to a time when music and the industry was finding its way.

This songwriter (sorry, I missed the introduction part) talked about how many of the greatest songs of that era...from Elvis to Ella...were written in the back of an establishment called 'Beefsteak Charlie's' in New York City. That's right, Nashville wasn't always the music capitol of the world. She described late night collaborations between writers...using napkins and old paper sacks...anything to keep the music and lyrics flowing. And the next morning...there was a good chance you'd have a hit on your hands. That is a good example of how it used to work and, in some ways, still does. Songwriters creating hits and making people stars.

Now, fast forward a decade and a half. The era of the songwriter is still in full effect but we have a new breed of artist fighting for recognition. One of the most famous, and most influential, was Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan epitomized the singer/songwriter. He wrote amazing songs and then he sang them...and became a star.

I love the nostalgia and the mental pictures I get from listening to and thinking about stories from the early days in the music industry. But, those thoughts always lead me back to today and many other events that have brought us to where we are with music. Of course, there are still thousands and thousands of songwriters out there making amazing music. David Foster is a good one.

But there are just as many, and maybe more, great singer/songwriters who are out there writing and performing their own music...music they have a deep, emotional connection to...because they created it. In my opinion, this is the purest form of art there is. There is something incredible about an artist taking an idea, a thought, a vision, and putting it on paper, to music, and with a voice.

That is what we are looking for at Tate Music Group. The music industry is changing. Of course there will, sadly, always be reality shows that give us another singer/dancer/??? I don't want to discredit what other artists are doing but, in my opinion, there is a growing desire for authentic, meaningful music. I think that is a huge reason why artists like Bob Dylan were and are so popular. They have something to say...something original...something that is truly theirs. Their songs had a message and a meaning and they connected to people at a deep level.

At Tate Music Group, we want artists that we can help connect to people...to help share their music and message to as many as possible...and to help them to create and keep something that is truly theirs.

In my reading and web-browsing, I stumbled across an interesting article from a professor of music marketing. One of the final assignments he gives his class is a 1 year marketing plan. For these 'up and coming artists,' he has them create a plan which includes their strategy and goals for the next year of their music lives.

Interestingly, he explains that most of his students write down very general goals...things like sell more CDs and play more gigs. He argues that though these are great things to have happen, they don't really give you a basis to judge success or failure. His response to this, and I have to agree, is to be specific in setting goals and plans. His examples include sell 100 CDs, 200 single downloads, and 20 T-shirts per month...also, play 3 shows/gigs in Atlanta in June. Specifics like that. This way, he argues, you have a way of judging if you are succeeding and if not, you can look at the situation to figure out how to improve.

At Tate Music Group, in the Music Marketing Department and our Artist Acquisitions, we stress these same principles. It seems like a daily occurrence...talking to artists who have goals that are great but not always measureable. One of the most commonly used statements: "I/We want to make a living doing music..." Okay, that sounds great. Tate Music Group wants that for you, too. The question is, how are you going to make that happen? Specifically, what things are you doing to insure this success? How are you measuring it?

At Tate Music Group, we want to help you achieve your dreams and goals as an artist. That is why we have set up our marketing and promotion the way we have. We want to come alongside our artists and help them find success by setting manageable, achieveable goals...as well as giving the support needed to carry them out.

For example, if you want to sell 2,500 CDs/albums within 1 year of your release, then we want to set up a strategy that allows that to be measured and achieved. Let's plan on selling 100 albums before or on your release date. Then, divide the year into 12 months and sell 200 albums per month...or go farther and plan on playing a minimum of 4 shows/events per month and shoot for 50 albums per show. That is a plan that will allow you to look back at your numbers after 6 months and evaluate/re-evaluate where you are. Perhaps you have oversold your projections and you now need only sell 800 more albums to hit goal. Or, maybe you needed a break and had to drop to only 2 shows per month. Whatever the case, this allows you to see what you are doing and to take stock as to the success (be it huge or more moderate) of this musical venture.

For us here at Tate Music Group, we want all of our artists to be massive successes. The reality is that there will be levels of success...and a lot of that depends on the teamwork and goals of both TMG and the artist. The fact is, having good, well-planned, realistic goals will allow you to remain focused and aware of what and how you are doing. It also helps to reduce the amount of frustration that may arise due to a lack of planning and a lack of having a 'big picture.' You have to see where you want to be and realize that it will take time, hard work, and even some breaks to get there.

Ultimately, what I am trying to say is this...Rome wasn't built in a day...and neither was U2.

I read an interesting post by Derek Sivers, the guy who started CD Baby and then sold it for a lot of dough. He brings up some interesting thoughts and questions about the future of CD sales, especially in-store sales. He makes the comment that he believes CDs to be on the downhill slide and, he believes, they will be all but obsolete in a few years. I must say that I agree with him, for the most part, but I don't believe it will happen as soon as he thinks it will.

Technology is a wonderful thing, unless you are the thing that technology just helped to replace. I do think that, much like the cassettes of my youth, CDs will be fully replaced by the digital files that are making a long-term home in the jean pockets of the next generation.

I don't see this as a bad thing, though, and neither does Tate Music Group. Sure, if you grew up going to the store to buy a CD you will most likely always want to go to the store to buy a CD. I get that. What I don't get is the worry and focus that is put on the 'in-store' sales. In my opinion, the focus should be on the 'sale.' Period.

A huge part of what Tate Music Group provides our artists is the nationwide distribution which includes in-store as well as online. We will continue to provide this distribution for as long as stores are carrying CDs. What I, we, want the artists we work with to realize is that it doesn't matter how or where the CD is bought/sold. It really only matters that it was, in fact, sold.

A sold album, whether physical or digital, is an album that is being listened to, talked about, and promoted by the fans who are listening. When this happens, the music and the message and meaning it carries is shared with the people who, as an artist, you want to share it with. It grows and spreads and, let's be honest, it is probably shared, too. But that is okay because every sale helps the cause and because Tate Music Group is working with our artists to benefit from this popularity through radio and live gigs. It all fits together.

I don't think CDs are waving goodbye just yet. I do think that digital music is moving in permanently but I think, at least for now, there is room for both. And as long as there is room and demand for both, Tate Music Group will offer them...and anything new that technology introduces to us.

I just hope the next idea involves holograms...

Well, it's almost midnight and Super Bowl LXIII is officially over. I have to say, it was a much better game than anyone would have thought. Down to the wire...that is how we (who don't have a pro team to really cheer for) like our Super Bowls. The commercials were pretty good...especially Cash4Gold with the MC Hammer cameo. I'm going to have to ask my boss, our president, why Tate Music Group didn't have an ad during the game.

Since I work for Tate Music Group and listening and reviewing music is what I get to do all day, I want to comment on one of the non-sports stars of the game...even if it was halftime. Yes, I am talking of 'The Boss' - Bruce Springsteen. I thought it was a great performance of great, dare I say, timeless music. I was, however, a little disappointed that 'Born In the USA' didn't make the playlist...but 'Glory Days' was a good replacement. And did you see the slide...belly first into the camera? That is what it means to get up close and personal with 'The Boss.'

I've noticed something about the halftime shows in the past few years...ever since the infamous 'wardrobe malfunction' performance, they have featured time-tested, professional, hall of fame bands and artists. Here is the list from 2005 to tonight: Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen.

Now, granted, I know that not everyone is going to like all of these artists. Regardless of your musical preference, I would like to point out that all of these artists (and U2 who played in 2002) are 'hall of fame' artists for a number of reasons - great music, a great fan base, some lucky breaks, and a lot of hard work...serious, 24/7/365 hard work. The difference between these time-tested artists and the thousands of 'one hit wonders' (including most of the American Idols) is that very thing - hard work.

At Tate Music Group, we understand the need and the importance of hard work. Sure, lucky breaks and a strong fan base are definitely needed to really 'make it' but it is the understanding that you, as an artist, are starting a business (and working as if that is the case) that can and will put you over the competition. You may have some of the greatest music ever but if you don't work hard and work smart to get people to hear it, your just one more hopeful waiting for your big chance to shine.

The problem with that is the waiting. Sure, we want you to shine but at Tate Music Group, we want to work hard and help create those 'big chances,' along with as many other chances you can get to share your music. So, as our artists pursue their 'super bowl moment,' we want to make sure they keep shining on the smaller stages that lead there.

I heard that 'The Boss' wants to see Coldplay as next year's entertainment. I'd love to see that...unless we can get one of Tate Music Group's artists to fill that slot instead.

One of the things we focus on with the artists Tate Music Group is privileged to work with is the radio. Every artist wants to be heard on the air...some want to hear themselves (which is perfectly normal), others want to make sure their music and message gets broadcast to as many as possible, and most want both. Again, perfectly normal. In fact, we might think something strange if radio and musical exposure via FM/AM airwaves wasn't something an artist was interested in.

What gets tricky is the fact that we don't own or control the stations we talk to regarding our artists. Many times, to them, we are just one of hundreds and thousands of groups or artists who approach them to play some music. So, when you don't control the station or the station manager...and you are (or represent) one of thousands of new (really good) artists, how do you make the station/manager/radio-world take notice? Good question.

Tate Music Group hits this question from a few different angles. One thing our Marketing team makes sure to do is build good, personal relationships with station managers and program/music directors. Many artists still send a CD in an envelop with a 'please play me' note included. Granted, the music might be tremendous but the managers and directors are overworked, overstressed, out of time, and they receive hundreds of those types of submissions every week. It isn't worth it to them to sort through it all to find the few hidden gems. I can't say I disagree with them.

At TMG, we approach things from the personal level. We want to respect their time and we know that we only have a small window to impress and connect. We make sure to connect on a personal level, to let the stations know we are a strong, well-established company that is backing some really, really great music. We also refrain, unless directly requested, from sending 'cold CDs.' Instead, we create for our artists a professional, genre and artist specific electronic press-kit to send their way. These are sharp, well created, easy to navigate, and full of all necessary info to tell about the artist and the music. Since we only have a few seconds to catch their attention, we want to 'wow' them with a great looking, user-friendly EPK.

Besides the personal connections and the EPKs, Tate Music Group has started to offer our own staff and services in ways that are very hard to refuse. As TMG began contacting stations and talking with the directors, we noticed a need (and an opportunity) to take some of the workload off of their plates. We do this by creating our own programs to fit specific stations and areas. We have 2 major shows as of now (with more being added) playing weekly on over 450 stations nationwide. There are many other shows and opportunities on the horizon. This is just a small taste of what Tate Music Group is doing when it comes to 'attacking' the radio world on behalf of our artists. We understand how important the radio is to helping up and coming artists gain more and more of an audience. We also see where the radio market is heading. We are constantly discussing, planning, and dealing in regards to online and satelite radio.

November and December were very busy times for me. I mean, you had Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, not to mention about 20 'dirty santa' parties to attend. I still don't know what I am going to do with a ceramic tea pitcher shaped like a duck.

So January should be a great relief, a slow down from the hustle and bustle of the holiday months, right? Not hardly. I think this month is proving to be just as busy as the last two...and its really disrupting my sleep patterns. Maybe January is a bit hectic because a new year brings new excitement and new possibilities? I'll buy that. I think that is very true.

At Tate Music Group, there are a lot of new exciting events, plans, and possibilities. One exciting plan is the growth and increase of Tate Music Group. In the past year, we have doubled our staff and created a movement that is already starting to knock the doors off of the music industry. This coming year, we will again be doubling, perhaps tripling, the size of our staff as well as our distribution and other marketing tools. It is a very exciting time to be a part of Tate Music Group.

Unlike other companies who try and maintain in order to keep afloat, Tate Music Group seeks to expand and grow because of the success, strong leadership, and smart choices we have made to get where we are. It is because of these aggressive moves and plans we are able to grow and set the standard for how artists should be treated and partnered with.

One of the major events, which I have mentioned before, is our Artist of the Year Contest. We are already collecting the many, many song entries we will receive...and this is just the beginning. What I have noticed is just how many great artists we have. How will anyone judge and narrow those down? There are so many great songs, all competing for one grand prize. That's a wonderful problem to have...I'm just glad it isn't up to me.

So, I guess I'll try and get some rest when I can and realize that all the hard work and extra hours will be worth it...especially when I see the satisfaction on the faces of our artists. At Tate Music Group, we want our artists to know that we are fully committed to helping them succeed...because when they succeed, we succeed.

This truly is a great partnership...and this will definitely be a great year.

tate music group...2009: a look ahead

Well, another year has been booked and the new year begins. I only have about 16% battery life left on my laptop so I will be brief. And yes, tonight, I am just lazy enough to not go get my plug-in to recharge. My apologies to those of you looking for a good, long read. I just want to take a moment to look ahead at what this new year already has in store for Tate Music Group and our artists.

In March, Tate Music Group will hold the inaugural Artist of the Year Contest. I have to say, there was a bit of a frenzy to get everything in by the 31st. It was a lot of fun, though. It is going to be very difficult for the judges to pick one winner from the amazing pool of artists we have. I know I couldn't do it.

Tate Music Group will also, in 2009, sell a lot of CDs. This isn't necessarily a 'look how great we are' statement but a 'look how great our artists are' statement. We put the channels and work in place to allow for sales but it is the tremendously talented musicians and artists we are blessed to work with who really make it happen. That is what makes this such a great partnership.

Last but not least, Tate Music Group will have hundreds and hundreds of events for our artists all over the country. I am really excited about this. Concerts and signings, as well as interviews, are so vital for success. It takes a lot of work and getting out there to really build up a fan-base and a following. I have read that it takes 100 true fans to be a success. Why? Because those 100 people will be your most reliable attendees, your biggest bullhorns, and your personal and unlimited invitation force. They will be the ones showing up to your shows and signings with 10 of their friends. Multiply that by hundreds and hundreds of shows and you get...well...its too late for complicated math problems but you get the idea. A lot!

As I look ahead to 2009, it looks really bright for Tate Music Group and the artists we are privileged to work with...and for those we have yet to meet. So I say to you all, Happy New Year...because I know it truly will be!

I'm not sure how we got here so quickly but we are only 3 days from 2009.

Most people would associate this statement with the coming of the New Year. However, at Tate Music Group, it holds an entirely different meaning. For TMG, it is the deadline for eligibility in the 2008 Tate Music Group Artist of the Year Contest. And that means there is a lot of work to do in the next 3 days.

We are really excited about this inaugural TMG artist competition. It is more than just a competition, though. It is a way for us at Tate Music Group to tell our artists how much we appreciate them and to showcase the talent we are able to work with everyday.

Tate Music Group artists will be choosing one of their songs to submit for initial judging. Based on writing, musicianship, and a few other criteria, the top songs, and therefore, artists, will be invited to come to Oklahoma City to perform their song live in front of a packed house and a celebrity judging panel. Ultimately, if you outperform the competition, you win the cash and prizes.

It is going to be a great time. I have been having a blast being a part of the planning and, truth be told, I wish I was eligible to compete. That would mean, though, that I would need to have an album and musical talent...how about I just leave that up to the real Tate Music Group artists?

I can't wait. Its crunch time.

Last night was the annual Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing Christmas party. What an experience that was. There was great food, presents and prizes, and very unusual entertainment. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Needless to say, it was a night that will not soon be forgotten.

As much as I would love to describe the silly skits that were performed or the amazing generosity shown by the Tate family (raffle prizes and gifts were everywhere), I have another reason for this post.

Every year Ryan Tate, President of Tate Publishing and Enterprises, LLC, addresses the entire staff in what we call the 'State of Tate Address.' It is a time where he tells us about the past year...what we have accomplished...where we need to improve...and how many sodas and brownie bites we have consumed as a staff in the cafe. Although there were a lot of funny statements made about staff food consumption, two figures really stood out to me and made me that much more thankful to be a part of Tate Music Group and the Tate Publishing family.

1. In 2008, Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing set up over 24,000 events for our arists and authors all over the United States. Also in 2008, Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing sold over 1.4 million CDs and books through events and distribution. That is incredible! What really stands out to me is that these are more than just numbers, they are a true measure of success, hard work, and great business strategy. We have a proven track record and it is apparent that our artists and authors are benefiting greatly from this.

2. In 2008, Tate Music Group and Tate Publishing gave over $660,000 in unsolicited funds to local, national, and overseas ministries focused on proclaiming and furthering the Kingdom of God. Wow! What an incredible incentive for success. It is such a blessing to work for a company that has its priorities in order.

It is no wonder that Tate Publishing and Enterprises, LLC, which includes Tate Music Group, was voted as one of the best places to work in 2008. For you artists and authors alike, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the best company to work with to help you accomplish all your dreams and goals.

I can't wait to see what 2009 brings...

Everybody loves contests. Its true. Don't believe me? I'm willing to bet that if you are a college football fan, like me, you were very busy this weekend doing nothing but watching the last Saturday of the regular season. And, I'm willing to bet that most of you, during the halftime shows, were getting all hyped up watching those guys and gals trying to throw footballs into over-sized soda cans. If you are anything like me, you were thinking about how you totally could have done that better than everybody else. Am I right?

Well, I can't really help you when it comes to those 'giant cola can challenges.' As a Tate Music Group artist, however, I can help you regarding that drive and competitive nature you have deep within your being. How? By giving you the chance to beat out all the rest of the competition.

December 31st, 2008 marks the end date for eligibility into the inaugural Tate Music Group 'Artist of the Year Contest.' I realize many of you may have no idea what I am talking about. Allow me to explain. This will be the first year we will be putting our artists' songs and styles against each other in friendly competition.

Each TMG artist will choose one of their songs to enter into this contest. The songs will be judged in many different rounds and by many different judges and factors. The top finalists will be invited to come to Oklahoma City, all expenses paid, to perform their song live for a panel of guest celebrity judges. Everybody will have an amazing time...and the grand prize winner will head home with over $20,000 in cash and prizes. Not bad for one nights work.

Needless to say, we are all really excited about this contest. For one, it is going to be a great time. It is also going to be a great opportunity for Tate Music Group to show our artists how much we appreciate them. I have no idea what the outcome will be. There are so many great artists in the TMG family...and there is still plenty of time for others to join this year.

tate music group...a december to remember

It is hard to believe that Tate Music Group is about to see its first year come to a close. What a year it has been. I do realize it is only the 2nd of December but you get the point. Now is the time of the year we start looking back at where we have been. We have seen some great things happen here at Tate Music Group and I wanted to just take a few moments to remember some of them.

Tate Music Group has gone from an idea in the heads of our company founders and executives to a key leader in the changing music industry. The 'old model' of a record label isn't working and 'indie' artists are the rage...though most don't have the resources, connections, or ability to really get things done on their own. That is where TMG comes in. We offer artists the best of both worlds - the backing and resources to get things done and the freedom to stay true to themselves and their music. That's a big thing.

Tate Music Group is also many steps ahead of where our parent company, Tate Publishing, was at the same time in its history. Granted, Tate Publishing paved the way in a new territory and has been influential in helping TMG get to where we are. That said, it is still a great accomplishment to be this far along the process this early in the game. And, if the huge success of our parent company is any indication of where Tate Music Group will be...watch out! That's another big thing.

Tate Music Group has also seen our marketing, promotions, and distribution grow immensely in this short amount of time. We are paving the way by offering Digital Download Cards, as well as CDs, for our artists to stay in front of where the market is going. We have over 400 radio stations, all across the country, who are playing TMG produced programs on a weekly basis. Our distribution has grown from working with a few stores directly, to working with one major distribution company, to now working with two of the biggest, most successful and respected distribution outlets in the nation. Those are all really big things.

So you see, there are a lot of big, great things happening at Tate Music Group. All of these things have happened in our first year of existence. It's almost scary to think about what will happen in 2009.

I can't wait to find out.

One of the things I am most proud of regarding Tate Music Group is our contract. It is, hands down, the best contract available to a music artist. One of the great things you will notice about our contract is that it is pro artist. Our artists retain their song rights, they have final approval of production, and they have freedom. They can decide if Tate Music Group is where they want to stay or if they want to move on. Of course, we never want any artist to go elsewhere which is why we work so hard to constantly earn their business. I don't know if you will find that anywhere else.

Most people who read this post will probably not believe our contracts are as good as I am saying they are. With that in mind, I thought about how I could explain and show off our contract offer without just cutting and pasting. I decided to just hit the main points of what we do...what sets us apart from everybody else...what makes our contracts and our model better than all the rest.

So here is the 'bullet point' version of a Tate Music Group contract. Enjoy.

tate music group...star gazing

Let me start by saying, "I don't like award shows." Any kind. It doesn't matter. I don't even like the ESPY's. That being said, I found myself watching (though a bit grudgingly) the CMA awards a few nights ago. It was a very big production, with A-list celebrities, and a lot of great musical talent (though my choices of the best will probably differ from most). It was an impressive spectacle...and it ended up being a very thought provoking show for me.

It made me think about the artists who have made it to that point in their career. That is a very impressive thing, to say the least. But it isn't the norm...and it doesn't really paint a fair picture of what it takes to get close to that kind of pinnacle. I guess I just wish there were more stories about how many of these artists had to struggle to get shows and play for free, just to be across the street from where Randy Travis was playing. Those are the stories, in my opinion, that tell the more truthful side of this industry. That is more of the norm...not standing in line for a TV show competition.

I mean, don't get me wrong...if you can make it on the TV circuit...regardless of what show or network...take that opportunity and run with it. Look at Kellie Pickler. She didn't even win and she was a featured artist on the CMA's. The truth is, most artists aren't going to make it on a show like that. Most artists aren't even going to try and stand in line. They are going to get themselves in small bars, clubs, coffee shops, churches, and everywhere else they can to get their music heard. Their favorite night is 'open mic night' at the places that have the most people.

As I watched this award show, I started thinking about some of the artists who are now pretty large, household names. I thought about what I saw and experienced them doing to get to where they are now. Sure, they got some good breaks, but they put a lot of leg work in before those breaks came.

Pat Green: He was one of my favorite artists in college (and I don't even really like country music that much). His sound was raw and familiar and aimed right at you. It didn't feel commercial at all. He was famous in the college scene because he made his living, literally, by playing college after college, small venue after small venue, with the occasional festival and opening for a major act.

John Mayer: Another major music icon while I was in college. I never knew much about him except that he was an incredible guitarist and a great concert artist. I do know, however, that if it weren't for the copy of his live bootlegged CD, he would have never made it on to TRL with Carson Daly. I'm pretty sure every college girl in America 'owned' his live album and called TRL daily (no pun intended).

Switchfoot: I know these guys have paid their dues because I remember getting a CD sampler for $1.99 that had their first 'single' on it. That was a long time ago (at least to me - probably 10+ years ago at least). Switchfoot travelled and played youth functions, church concerts, and summer camps and festivals for years before making it as one of the most successful 'crossover' bands ever.

The point of this late night rant is this: Although all those TV shows are popular (you know the ones), it isn't a true view of reality. The reality is it is going to take a lot of work and, probably, a lot of time to get to that point. The great thing for the artist we work with, the don't have to do all of it alone. We at Tate Music Group are committed to helping them get closer and closer to their dreams and goals.

I say aim for the stars...just don't forget it isn't just a moment away.

tate music group...a cover story

I had an artist the other day ask me about cover songs. His purpose for the question was to find out if Tate Music Group produced albums with cover songs on them. The answer to that question is no...not because we don't like them...we just want to focus on the original music our artists write and produce.

Just because Tate Music Group doesn't normally produce them doesn't mean that our artists can't practice and perform them. Sometimes, a well placed, well performed cover can completely win an audience. Why? I'm sure there are a lot of reasons. Here are a few. Cover songs (as long as they aren't too off-the-wall) are easily recognizable. They bring an element of comfort and familiarity. Cover songs are also, quite often, very singable. In fact, many popular cover songs are big karaoke hits. Cover songs also help the audience to forget they don't know your songs as well, if at all. A good mixture of cover songs will allow the audience to lump everything together, the familiar and the unfamiliar. Hopefully, if all the music was well written and performed, your CDs on the back table will sell out and, inevitably, there will be a huge demand for the live, bootleg album of you performing the theme song to 'Dukes of Hazzard.'

This conversation, and this post, has caused me to think about the songs that I would cover if I were to ever get back to playing gigs. It is a short list. I have taken into account the fact that I rarely hear anyone cover these songs...and I think some cool things could be added to each one. Please feel free to leave me your lists for comparison. tate music group...will rock you

Tonight I watched a replay of an old concert by one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Queen. Now, I know there are many people who never liked this band for a variety of different reasons. On the flip side, there are thousands and thousands who did and do. I am of the latter group.

If I may, though, I want to try and look at Queen objectively. Let's keep emotion or 'fandom' out of our thoughts on this one. With that being the case, I want to ask this question: What was it about Queen that made them one of the most popular and successful rock bands of all time? I don't know if I have the right answer to this question but I want to give you my thoughts (whatever that's worth).

First and foremost, Queen made great music. Their sound and songs were original, creative, and diverse. Many of their songs are considered 'anthems' - songs like 'We Will Rock You' and 'Another One Bites the Dust.' Those songs are timeless classics, despite the fact they are played at every sporting event in America. And then there is the 'epic' - 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' What more can you say about that song. "Party on."

Another great thing about Queen was their stage presence. They knew how to put on a show. Granted, I am not a fan of the weird wardrobe choices...but hey, it was the 70's (though I don't think the 80's were much better). I noticed some things about how they perform at concerts. They are energetic and excited to be there. They interact with the audience. They communicate with each other. They are extremely passionate about their music and their job.

When you add all that up, I think it gives a little insight into how and why they got where they did. But I can assure you it didn't happen overnight...and it surely wasn't an easy road. They had to start at the bottom, work hark, and catch as many breaks as they could. Eventually, they became 'Queen' to all of us (though they had been Queen for a long time before).

This is one of the things that excites me about Tate Music Group. I truly believe there are some groups and artists who are going to become household names. They will sell millions of CDs and perform before thousands of people every night. They won't, however, be at that point tomorrow (at least I don't think they will). It is going to take time, hard work, and some good breaks. Tate Music Group is committed to that kind of time and hard work. Our artists deserve it and we want to do whatever we can to help all of our artists make it to the next level. Truth be told, Tate Music Group is open to looking for and finding good breaks, too.

We want our artists to succeed. We want them to become the kind of artists who are household names. The question is...who will that be? Or, better yet, will that be you?

I had a very interesting (and quite uplifting) phone conversation with a potential Tate Music Group artist today. He is one member of a very talented group. Their sound is soulful and rich and their harmonies are really well balanced and full. He was talking to me about our contract offer and what TMG does for our artists. In the midst of my answering questions he said to me, "You guys have the best deal for artists. This is too good to be true."

Obviously, that comment made my day. I am very glad to know that all the hard work done here at Tate Music Group is being noticed. We come to work with a vision and a passion...to be the best there is. That may sound a bit 'ego' driven, but I assure you it isn't. We want to be the best music label out there because we want to offer nothing but the best to all of our recording artists. That will happen, and is happening, because of the staff who are a part of Tate Music Group and the amazing artists we are blessed to work with.

Somewhere in the midst of the aforementioned conversation, Tate Music Group was compared to 'Alice in Wonderland.' I have to say, that comparison caught me off guard. I don't want any of our artists to feel as if they are tumbling down a rabbit hole. I was, however, quickly relieved by this artist explaining that his comparison is based on the fact that he feels like our music contract and our services are, in his words, "a dream come true."

I am glad he is excited at this possible partnership. We are too. His statements are exactly what we strive for. Our parent company, Tate Publishing, has long since had the motto of: "Making your dreams a reality." I think I am going to tweak it a bit for Tate Music Group: "Making your music dreams a reality."

It may be plagiarism...but it's true.

tate music group...in bathrobes?

I am talking to a growing number of artists who are finding Tate Music Group online. That's great! We are glad you did. Sometimes they find us by searching for certain words (music label, record deal, etc). Others stumble across us while researching non-stick cookware!? I don't even pretend to know why that might happen. Either way, we are happy that you found Tate Music Group, or that Tate Music Group found you, or however that makes sense.

This got me thinking, though, that those of you finding us online might never see this commercial that runs in television spots. There are a couple reasons I love this commercial:

1. It is a commercial about Tate Music Group and what we do. (I am biased and I won't apologize for that)

2. It's short and to the point. I don't like long commercials...especially the ones with guys selling 'cloth paper towels' or books that show you how to get government money for starting a toothbrush repair shop.

3. It has my friend Dave in it. What's better is that it has Dave in a bathrobe. What's best is that it means that hundreds and thousands of people are watching Dave jump around in his bathrobe...while learning about Tate Music Group.

This, in my opinion, is good advertising. Enjoy.

a tate halloween debriefing

I survived it. I survived my first Tate Publishing & Tate Music Group Halloween. Some of you may say, "What is there to survive? It's just Halloween." To you, I say, "You have never seen a Tate Halloween!" What a day!

I don't know if I can truly do it justice with words, so I won't even try. The costumes were nothing short of remarkable. There were skits performed, Teen-Wolf was there, and I had to say hello to 15 different Johnny Depps. Wow! Friday was an incredibly fun day at work. How many people get to say that very often?

The point of this post (and yes, there is one) is to give kudos to my co-workers and my bosses. This past Friday was a day that, for me, reiterated things I already knew about whom I work with and for. It was a day that was full of creative energy and imagination. There was acting...some good...some not so good. I was surprised, over and over again, by people doing things I would have never imagined. It was a lot of fun.

Granted, days like Friday don't happen very often. Halloween is only once a year. But, having fun at work is something that is a core belief with Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group. I think that is important for people to know because I think it is an important thing to believe. You need to enjoy what you do. And for those artists who are working with Tate Music Group, it is important that they know we love what we do and we have a lot of fun doing it.

I have worked in jobs where I didn't enjoy what I did. I did it because I had to and I had no other choice at the time. Here, I get to do what I love and work with people who feel the same way. That is a vital part of the success of Tate Music Group. As an artist, I would want to know that the people working with me, those providing services for me, are happy and excited about what they do.

I know I am.

We spent the better part of the morning meeting with and talking to Mark Levine, an author and researcher of book publishers like Tate Publishing, parent company of Tate Music Group. It was pretty interesting, really. Even though he specializes in books, I felt like I walked away with a good bit of insight and information that I can use on the music end. He spoke to us as one on the outside looking in. What can we do better? Where do we seem strongest? What do outsiders say or think about us? Good stuff.

I think, though, that the most important thing I took from the discussion was one specific statement Mark made. I have been thinking about it all day. He said, "You don't have the luxury of assuming people think you are honest." I have to admit, that stung a little bit...and I'm still not exactly sure why.

Maybe its because I do assume people think that. About me. About Tate Music Group. About our offer. But they don't...and they have plenty of reasons not to.

Tate Music Group is just one honest company, among many, fighting an uphill battle. We are fighting this battle because of other companies and individuals who have taken advantage of people, causing all the cynicism and negativity we see today. This is true in all areas of business and service, but it seems to be especially true in the music world. There are a lot of promises made to people that can't be controlled. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, there is a growing lack of responsibility regarding written and spoken word.

So what do we do? How can Tate Music Group win this battle? We keep fighting. We keep doing what we say we'll do. We continue to refrain from saying things that aren't true or promise things that are outside of our control. We do all this and, little by little, we will see the overall assumption begin to change.

a job like no other

It was cold and rainy today at Tate Music Group...a fine day for a post. I was thinking today about what I get to do for a living, what Tate Music Group pays me to do for them. Each time I think about this I have a hard time believing my luck. Of course, I find it amazing that I get the job of listening to music, giving reviews, and offering contracts but my favorite part isn't any of these. My favorite part is when I talk to potential TMG artists and ask them to tell me about their music.

No joke, I really like that part. I like it because every single artist is different in their response. Sure, there are some similarities but, for the most part, I am hearing stories, backgrounds, and causes that are completely unique to each artist. It is an emotional journey on many different levels. You would be surprised how much you can learn about a person by just asking them to tell you about something they love, something as emotional as music.

Yesterday I was able to talk with a potential Tate Music Group artist about all these things. He described his music and the background that brought him to this point. He talked about his group and why they do what they do. He talked about his vision for using music as a way to minister to the people in his community (and beyond) who need to hear something positive come out of people who can relate. He talked about how music, to him, is such an incredible tool, waiting to be used and effective. It was an incredible conversation to have with someone I haven't ever actually met (face to face).

It might surprise you but that actually happens a lot. I am constantly inspired by the artists I have the pleasure of working with. That is something I try to never take for granted. I want to take every opportunity I can to listen to our artist's stories and the emotions behind the music. That is where the real reviews happen. Lots of people can play a chord but few can really strike one.
